From my window ... I see women as leaders by Donna Streufert , a column from the Lutheran Woman's Quarterly, Fall 2004">

Amy was bright-eyed and eager, focused, intelligent and warm, giving generously of herself to others-children, the poor, her peers. She modestly accepted the leadership award from the Women's Leadership Institute of Concordia University Wisconsin, and we were very pleased to present it. This young woman, still a college junior, had already discovered how God could use her to lead others by serving them. Autumn is a time for returning-to school, to work, to service on committees and boards in church and community. Women will fill so many of the leadership roles in these areas. What kind of leaders do women make? The most effective female leaders I have known and worked with share some common characteristics-characteristics revealed in very telling remarks they have made to me over the years! "Will you work with me on this?" Women are collaborators. We seem comfortable working side by side. The woman who first said this to me opened a world of opportunity for leadership, service and personal growth for me. "We can do that!" Women see the possibilities. We are willing to find a way, to think creatively, to address old challenges in new ways. "I'll take care of it!" Women accept responsibility. We share the burden. We pool our strengths for the good of one another. "Let me know how I can help." Women are supportive. We are ready in the wings when needed. Egos need not win the day. Partnership is more important. "We can work around that." Women are flexible. Women are used to the unexpected. We don't let it sabotage the goal. "What are your thoughts on this?" Women value others. Mutual respect-no matter the culture, gender, class or educational level-opens us to one another, paves the way for harmony and efficiency. All these women leaders exude a confidence that seems to come from a close personal relationship with their Savior. They know and rely on His love for them. They know who they are and the gifts God has given them. And they willingly partner with others to lead and to serve. Do these characteristics describe you? If so, you go, girl! - Donna Streufert, Editor-in-Chief |
