Salt adds flavor to our food. Light brightens the darkest corner. Salt and light are common commodities but they change whatever they penetrate. In fact, when salt is put in food and light into the darkness, both of them lose something of themselves to become effective!

The Lutheran Women's Missionary League has existed for over 62 years and yet, it can still be an agent of change. It can still be effective! LWML represents the salt and light through our focus on Bible study and missions. Praying for our mission grants has been one of the blessings of our unity in the LWML.

We are in a new biennium. It might be time to take a look at your group and see how effective you are in making a difference as salt and light in your church and community. The self evaluation/assessment the LWML completed this past year shows the most important needs of non-LWML members as well as active members are: Bible study, prayer, fellowship and support, missions and service. Is your group providing activities or events in those areas for women of all ages in your congregation?

Each activity of your local group needs:

  • Careful planning
  • Mission focus
  • Clear purpose

Keep Christ at the center of your planning and thinking to give your program meaning and effectiveness.

I encourage every member to be "Together in Prayer every Monday at Noon." This program was established in 1986 under the title, Linked in Prayer. Today I am challenging every member to be part of the LWML TEAM Together in Prayer! Pray for our missions, our missionaries, your zone and district leaders, the activities of your LWML, for district and national mission grants.

Use your mite box faithfully with prayer. The mite box was motivated by the widow's mite, and LWML members believed that together they could make a big difference if they denied themselves something each week and gave the money they saved to missions. Mites have made a big difference, so continue to use your mite box with this faithfulness!

From the very beginning of LWML, the motivation of women has come from their love for their Lord and His love for all people! Thank you for your commitment to love and to help, to serve with joy, for your involvement in the mission focus, fellowship and spiritual growth opportunities afforded by the LWML. May you continue to be that agent of change through the salt and light you bring to the lives of others every day!
