"You are what you are," said Rev. Barry Keurulainen, proclaimer for Thursday evening's communion service, explaining that Jesus doesn't call us to become salt and light but rather declares we already are salt and light by God's grace. One of the ways we demonstrate salt and light, Keurulainen said, is by our joy-joy in Christ that doesn't depend upon circumstances but rests solely on God's faithfulness, His truth and His Word.

"In His holy flirtation with the world, God occasionally drops handkerchiefs," said Keurulainen, quoting author Frederick Buechner. These "handkerchiefs" are saints-you and me. As we live as salt and light, people are attracted not to us but to Jesus.
