Sisters by
Cindy Roley

I am blessed with a mother, daughters, sisters-in-law, friends, colleagues and various other relatives. I shared experiences with two wonderful grandmothers. However, I do not have a sibling sister. And after watching our daughters and other sibling sisters as they grow older, it seems I am relationship challenged. Recently, my daughter Katie and I were asking a blessing over our food at an airport diner.

A woman sitting next to us quietly commented that it appeared she was sitting next to "sisters." We looked at this stranger and smiled. "Sisters in the Lord?" I asked. She smiled and nodded.

Now, however, I sometimes yearn for the closeness of another woman who shares my history, one with whom I can relate on an intimate level all that has occurred or is occurring in my life. To help fill that void, God has enriched my life with sisters in Christ. These special women pray for me, rejoice with me, weep with me, hold me accountable, give me counsel, worship with me, share meals with me, spend time with me.

Our heavenly Father, in whose image we are created, desires our fellowship. God who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 1:9a), knows that we need the strength and support of other believers in our own personal walk with Him and in reflecting His light to the world.

Acts describes the first Christians: They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer (2:42). God encourages us to ... consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, (Hebrews 10:24). Then He admonishes us not to neglect meeting together (Hebrews 10:25). God blesses our gatherings with His presence: 'For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them' (Matthew 18:20).

I treasure times of fellowship with my sisters in Christ. We share Bible study, prayer, song, joys, sorrows, good works and simple entertainment. We share life in the Spirit on this earth. We share eternity. I thank God for their faithfulness and their Christian examples. May God continue to bless our community and our fellowship. May we be blessed to be a blessing, to make a difference in each other's lives and to work together to impact the lives of others in our world with the love of Christ.
