True or False: How do we know what we believe
is true?
By Judy Wiedenkeller
 Have you noticed how popular
it is to be "spiritual" lately? I have heard many people
say, "I'm a very spiritual person." Many religious
voices are vying for attention in our culture, and many people
are listening. Whether it is a specific religious group or a
vague spirituality, it may not be easy to discern clearly exactly
what is being taught.
Jim Valentine, of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, has researched and
helped explain the teachings of many religious groups through
his 25 years of work with C.A.R.I.S. Christian Apologetics and
Research Institute. Jim provides resources and teaches Bible
classes about the Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, New Age groups
and other cults.
How do we determine the facts about some of these growing
religions? Merely reading their statement of beliefs may not
be enough information to reveal truth. As Jim explains, "In
recent years the Jehovah's Witnesses have sharpened their marketing/sales
to make them appear more mainstream Christian."
When trying to discern if a group's teachings line up with
Scripture, consider these questions:
Who is Jesus? Is He a man like us?
Was He a prophet, one of many gods? Was He God?
What are the requirements for salvation?
What does it take to be saved?
Is Jesus able to take away our sins?
Or do we have to follow a set code?
What is taught about the nature of
God? Does their concept teach there is one God who has eternally
existed as three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
Is a special person funneling "truth"
to the people? Does someone "speak" for God? Can God
change His direction, mind or laws?
What about Guilt/Grace/Forgiveness?
Many false religious systems are without the idea of forgiveness,
and people must struggle through individual guilt.
What is the history of the group? It
may be helpful to understand how the particular system was formed.
How can we help someone who may be involved in such a group?
Know what you believe as a Christian.
Ask questions in love.
Remember that Christianity is the only
religious system that began with God reaching down to people.
Other systems are man's attempt to please God and control behavior.

such as the informative booklet series published by the LCMS
