Make a Difference Day. Communities have them. Companies have them. Scout troops have them. Volunteers show up, armed with tools of the trade from spades and hoes to ladders and paintbrushes or brooms and trash bags.

And the results are well worth the efforts. Daisies and petunias pop up in the schoolyard. The town's hiking path is clean. The home of a senior citizen boasts a fresh coat of paint. The volunteers trek back home, tired but satisfied.

When Jesus walked this earth, He was looking for volunteers who would make a difference. The harvest is plentiful, He said, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field (Luke 10:2). The harvest field, however, is not a yard in need of landscaping or a path in need of litter removal. The harvest field is the heart.

My heart was once a harvest field, and God graciously sent forth workers whom He used to make a difference in my life:

  • My parents, who gave me the rare gift of a home filled with the love of Jesus.
  • My high-school choir director, who guided me and countless other teens into a closer walk with our Savior.
  • My husband, who continually models a life that honors God.
  • And, of course, countless Christian women, LWML sisters who cling to Jesus in good times and bad.

People who make a difference-an eternal difference-are people whose hearts have been touched by Christ's redeeming love. Who has made a difference in your life? Have you told them? Have you thanked them? Have you thanked God?
