The Founding of a Friends Into Serving Him Group
August 2010

We are TEEN LWML and we live in Dubuque, Iowa which is Iowa District East. We started our group right after the conference in Florida. My daughter was 14 at the time and had many teen girls her age in our church. She was looking for a project to do for her Silver Award with Girl Scouts. After approval from G.S. and our church, a TEEN LWML was formed. In March, 2006, we had our very first meeting. We meet 4 times a year, March, June, September, and December, the first Saturday from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM. All girls 8th -12th grade are invited to attend. Two of the months we concentrate on doing projects for the community, and the other two months we do World Relief projects. The girls take turns providing a light lunch and we have a Jeans Gem Bible Study. Our World Relief projects consist of quilts; the girls learned how to layer, tie and pin, with our senior ladies helping with the sewing on the machines. They also learned how to make diapers for layettes and how to assemble school and health kits. Layettes are their favorites. For our community outreach we do baby quilts for new mothers. We also assemble school kits for The Dubuque Lutheran School at our church. The girls made their own hot pink T-shirts with their names and Friends Into Serving Him ® logo and wear them on LWML Sunday. They help with passing out the bulletins, the offering, and they even sing a call to worship. When my daughter went for her Girl Scout Gold, she incorporated her Silver Award project and invited her “Friends” girls to help make full size quilts and stuffed teddy bears for The Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. We are now doing projects for Haiti; quilts, layettes, and health kits.
