Providing Food and the Gospel to Starving Children

Making a difference in a changing world

LWML Mission Grant #1

I know we’ve all seen the pictures of hungry children, and the situation tugs at our hearts.  We might even have said “I wish there was something I could do to help.”   Well, the truth of the matter is that you (all of us) are helping.

church members packaging foodAt the Albuquerque LWML Convention delegates voted to fund a $ 40,000 grant for providing food to starving children.  This grant was the number one vote-getter out of all the proposed grants. One half of this grant has already been funded. Our mite gifts on Giving Tuesday will help fund the balance and provide food for the hungry.

Mercy Meals of Siouxland (Iowa West) has packaged over a million meals of fortified rice/soy meals for the starving children all over the world.  With one regular packaging event held each month, along with several special events, meals have been packaged and sent to countries like Haiti, the Philippines, and Liberia, including a children’s orphanage in Bucharest, Romania.  Approximately 45,000 meals are packaged during a single event.

church members sealing food packagesThis is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:16-18).

Nursing Students Serving with Mercy Medical Team

Making a difference in a changing world

LWML Mission Grant #17, Nursing Students Serving with Mercy Medical Team - LCMS Office of International Mission $25,000

Mission Grant 17: some of the people being servedThere are many people around the world who will never have regular medical care, and may not see any sort of medical assistance more than once a year, if that often. Occasionally, this is the only time these individuals will see profession medical help.

LCMS Medical Mercy Teams travel to countries around the world where little medical help is available. They see hundreds of people every day for a week, often for easily treated illness. And often the patients they see will have waited for a couple weeks in advance of the teams arrival to their area.

Another Terrorist Converted to Christ

Wow! That caption, found in the Biblical Orthodox Lutheran Mission’s (BOLM) October newsletter, grabbed my attention. The heart of that article was the miraculous conversion of a former member of ISIS. The miracle of non-believers coming to faith in Jesus Christ is a regular occurrence because the Holy Spirit inspires men and women across the world to pray and donate to LWML Mission Grants, enabling organizations like BOLM to expand their ministry and reach more people with the message of salvation through Christ.

grant check presentationRev. George Naeem, Executive Director of BOLM stated, “May the Lord continue to bless LWML and all the leaders and ladies who are working faithfully to spread the Gospel and bring many lost to His Kingdom.

The grants of LWML make a big difference for the missionary work of BOLM, so thousands can convert to Christ every year.”

Rev. Naeem will be happy to email you their monthly newsletter. Contact him at gnaeem@comcast.net or BOLM’s website at bolmmission.org.

I take great comfort in knowing it is not my responsibility to convert the non-Christian. That great power is carried by our Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But I am humbled and honored that God allows me to be His missionary as I donate to these grants. Join me in sharing His story through LWML Mission Grants!

Continue to pray for all the mission grants. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday, November 27, you may donate toward the 2017–2019 LWML Mission Goal by using LWML Facebook, or at this website, lwml.org/givingtuesday. Your donation will be doubled on that day, thanks to the commitment of two generous donors.

Prison and Jail Ministry Synod-wide Conference

Making a difference in a changing world
LWML boothStrategic Plan Facilitator Carol von Soosten, President Patti Ross, and Junior Pastoral Counselor Mitch Schuessler

LWML Mission Grant #20

Humbling is my word to summarize the LCMS 2018 Prison and Jail Ministry Conference.

Your generous Mite Box offerings financed this conference where dedicated pastors and lay people involved in prison and jail ministry came together to share experiences, learn from motivating speakers, and receive guidelines and resources.

I learned these servants of the Lord sometimes risk their lives, face lawsuits, work long hours, and drive long distances as they deliver the Gospel to people desperate to hear that Jesus loves and forgives. In the face of their dedication to those in our penal system, I gave thanks for the faithful support from our LWML family of brothers and sisters in Christ. Many of us may not ever step foot into a jail or prison, but we are lifting up the hands of the workers who brave this challenging mission and ministry.

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:37-40).

What Can We Give God?

Why do we expect gifts for our birthdays? Should we not be sending gifts to our parents for giving us life? Why do we expect gifts for Christmas? It is Jesus’ birthday, not ours. Ultimately, that all we have, including our faith, is a gift from the Almighty. We should be thanking God and giving to Him. God has given us life, food and clothing, shelter, family and friends, the list goes on but most importantly the hope of eternal life because of Jesus’ sacrifice.

woman showing daughter globeIn thankfulness for all He has given to each of us, is there anything we can offer that reflects our Lord’s desires? Yes! We can give to others as He has given to us. Jesus said “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34). What a privilege to share His mercy and grace, and His message of salvation with the world. We serve, we love, we give mission offerings because He has first given to us!

What can we give to our Savior? Our lives, our service, our hands and feet, our silver and gold, our everything! At this very moment, souls are touched by God’s mercy and love through the LWML. As you peruse this website, you will find resources to help you serve others, grow and share your faith, and pray for and give to mission grants. Oh, the joy of returning His love!

In His service, filled with His joy,

Oh, Give Thanks unto the Lord for He is Good!

Praising God who has given me my great family and also my church family, warms my heart and makes me want, by the power of the Spirit, to give Him my all. I love to sing praises to God. I look around and see the wonders of His creation: mountains, oceans, the beautiful fall colors, the flowers, bright pinks, greens, yellows, gold, purples and reds. The creator of such great beauty loves me so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die for my sins and the sins of all people. He left His heavenly home and willingly became a sacrificial Lamb, seen clearly by His death on the cross.

Such love moves me to give to missions by way of my Mite Box. I also encourage my congregation to send in mite blessings so that the love of Jesus may be spread to others. As we approach Thanksgiving, let us make a joyful noise unto the Lord with our generous donations. Donate today!

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing! Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name! For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations (Psalm 100:1-5).

A Picture of the LWML or A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I take a lot of pictures. In fact, you might say I love taking pictures. Sometimes when I pull out my camera the people around me audibly groan knowing they soon may be captured ‘on film’ — again.

If I were to put together a picture of LWML, what would it look like? How would LWML be described? Maybe something like the following:

LWML = Lutheran Women joyfully serving the Lord with gladness,

LWML = Lutheran Women excitedly sharing their faith in Jesus’ Christ,

LWML = Lutheran Women actively living their lives as God’s children.

When you attend an LWML gathering, what is the picture you see? I see Lutheran Women in Mission enjoying fellowship, giving their mite offerings, studying God’s Word, singing His praises, and using their gifts and talents to further God’s kingdom.

The pictures on these posters are joy-filled examples of Lutheran Women in Mission. How about displaying a set at your next LWML gathering? Do you already have a set? Great! If you don’t and since you’re on our home page, click on the Shop tab in the menu bar on the top right, and type in posters in the search box. Have fun displaying them at your next gathering. You’ll be sharing a picture of the LWML.

Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is (1 John 3:2).

To God be the glory!
