The mission
of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League
is to assist each woman
of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
in affirming her relationship with the Triune God
so that she is enabled to use her gifts
in ministry to the people of the world.



PRIMARY TARGETS
and ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS

Christ-Centered Living – Being nourished by the Word and guided by the Spirit, each woman is actively demonstrating Christ’s love.

Telling the Good News – In response to our Lord’s Great Commission, each woman is compelled to share the Gospel, pray for, and recognize opportunities to do so, and then confidently live and speak her faith.

Partnering for Diversity – Oneness in Christ is strengthened through intentionally teaming with our LCMS sisters of varied ethnic, cultural, generational and organizational backgrounds.

Building up Our Sisters in Christ – LWML members grow and mature through mentoring relationships and through the training and support of current and potential leaders.

PURPOSE STATEMENTS

  • Executive Committee – The purpose of the Executive Committee is to focus the vision of the organization and energize its membership to carry out the mission statement.
  • Nominating Committee – The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to seek out qualified, gifted members to be candidates for elected positions.
  • Meeting Manager – The purpose of the meeting manager is to seek out and arrange for quality services to meet the personal and meeting needs of the LWML.
  • Planner – The purpose of the planner is to be responsible for focusing the vision of the organization through the use of a planning process.
  • Public Relations Director – The purpose of the public relations director is to interact with synodical entities, other extensions of the church and the world at large, informing them of the mission and ministry of the LWML, developing partner relationships, and influencing perceptions and attitudes toward Lutheran Women in Mission.
  • Archivist-Historian – The purpose of the archivist-historian is to gather, receive and preserve records and other materials of historical significance to the LWML.
  • Parliamentarian – The purpose of the parliamentarian is to serve as adviser on parliamentary procedure to the president, officers and members upon request.

COMMITTEE PURPOSE STATEMENTS
AND OBJECTIVES

CHRISTIAN LIFE DEPARTMENT

  • Christian Life Committee – The purpose of the Christian Life Committee is to provide women with resources to apply the Word of God to their lives.
    • Provide diverse prayer opportunities and encouragement for all women to live their faith.
    • Facilitate development of prayer services to lift our hearts and minds to the Lord.
    • Develop a booklet of prayers, for and by teens and their mentors, as a means to a richer prayer life.
  • Christian Resources Editors Committee – The purpose of the Christian Resources Editors Committee is to review current program helps, solicit authors to produce additional program helps and produce a 2-year meeting planner.
    • Women will have Scriptural resources to use to enrich their meetings and events.
    • Women will have resources in a variety of formats which will inspire them to share the Gospel.
    • Women will have resources which relate to diverse cultures, yet unite them with all believers.
    • Women will be invited to write resources which will help all to grow in their faith.
  • Mustard Seeds Task Force – The purpose of the Mustard Seeds Task Force is to develop and produce additional Mustard Seed packets.
    • Women will use Mustard Seeds as a supplement to their study of God’s Word.
    • Guided by the Spirit, women will utilize Mustard Seeds to demonstrate God’s love.
    • LCMS sisters of varied backgrounds will utilize Mustard Seeds which embrace our oneness in Christ.
  • Bible Study Task Force – The purpose of the Bible Study Task Force is to determine the best way to provide quality Bible studies for the LWML.
    • Discuss with Concordia Publishing House (CPH) possible Bible study/devotion collaboration between LWML and CPH.
    • Review current LWML Bible studies for possible revision, consolidation, or sell out.
    • Survey Board of Directors and Interdepartmental Meeting participants regarding Bible study use and preferences for topics and formats.

COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT

  • Media and Marketing Committee – The purpose of the Media & Marketing Committee is to assist committees in developing, advertising, and promoting their products and programs.
    • Members of the LCMS are aware of LWML and use LWML resources.
    • LWML presents a consistent and professional image and message.
  • Official Publication Staff – The purpose of the Official Publication Staff is to produce a publication informing women of the activities of the organization and providing topics for study and discussion to promote the object of the LWML
    • Provide e-subscriptions of the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly
    • Increase print and e-subscriptions by 6% in two years.
    • Reach all LCMS women with magazine content that reflects diversity in terms of ethnicity, age, circumstance, perspective.
    • Encourage the spiritual growth of readers by providing a variety of Bible studies, devotions, and features.
  • Web Site Task Force – The purpose of the Web Site Task Force is to develop, review, and maintain the site and to disseminate electronically the news of the LWML.
    • Increase resource availability on the LWML Web site.
    • Increase awareness of electronic communication as a tool with the LWML membership.
    • Provide support services to District LWML webmasters.
    • Increase awareness of LWML Web site content options among LWML Committee members.
    • Communicate with each Committee regarding their Web page(s) content.

GOSPEL OUTREACH DEPARTMENT

  • Gospel Outreach Committee – The purpose of the Gospel Outreach Committee is to motivate, equip and ensure the participation of women from diverse groups for service and witness to the church and world.
    • Celebrate the ministries of ethnic women leaders through the Heart to Heart Sisters program and focus on identifying women who can be a bridge between their cultures, the LWML and the church at large.
    • Encourage and promote the development of district Heart to Heart programs.
    • Establish a communication system that promotes networking among the Heart to Heart sisters and the LWML.
    • Provide more diversity to the LWML product line and be a resource for the church in ethnic wear.
    • Develop resources to enable women of the LCMS to be more effective witnesses.
  • Mission Advocacy and Grants Committee – The purpose of the Mission Advocacy and Grants Committee is to review and select mission grant proposals that will appear on the Mission Grants Ballot and to inform, encourage and motivate women to support mission grant recipients.
    • Inspired by her study of God’s Word, each woman is praying for a heart to see mission opportunities in everyday life.
    • Each women, knowing the stories of our grant recipients, supports our mite goal.
    • Children are encouraged and provided a way to show the love of Christ through a giving opportunity.

HUMAN CARE DEPARTMENT

  • Human Care Committee – The purpose of the Human Care Committee is to identify and coordinate compassionate response to those who are hurting or in need.
    • Women of the LWML understand Human Care as an integral part of their individual daily stewardship.
    • Women of the LWML care for the hurting and those in need by sharing their love and the Gospel of Christ.
    • Women of the LWML are exercising their minds, bodies and souls as they follow Christ’s example to care for themselves and others.
  • Friends Into Serving Him: Teen LWML Task Force – The purpose of the Friends Into Serving Him: Teen LWML Task Force is the continued development and support of teen and pre-teen girls in the mission of LWML.
    • A communication channel will be established in 100% of the districts through which zones and societies will receive Friends Into Serving Him information.
    • A system will be developed to measure the number of Friends Into Serving Him groups across the nation by the beginning of the district convention season in 2008.
    • Participants at 30 LCMS and LWML gatherings and conventions will have the opportunity to learn about the Friends program.
    • Teens will be nurtured at their District LWML conventions, the Portland Convention, and the National Youth Gathering 2010.
    • Teens will be nurtured through e-News and the LWML Web site.
    • Teens will use opportunities to share the Gospel.
    • The task force will develop activities and programs that can be used at the district and local level.

SERVANT RESOURCES DEPARTMENT

  • HOPE (Helping Organizations Participate Effectively) Committee – The purpose of the HOPE Committee is to support and to develop viable LWML groups and zones.
    • Provide activities and training to support LWML groups.
    • Develop resources to provide information to LWML members.
  • Leader Development Committee – The purpose of the Leader Development Committee is to support and encourage present and future leaders.
    • Women are provided resources and opportunities to become competent and comfortable in leadership roles.
    • Young women will grow and mature in the LWML as potential leaders.
  • Structure Committee – The purpose of the Structure Committee is to keep the bylaws and related resources flexible while maintaining the legal status of the organization.
    • Review and approve proposed district bylaws amendments/revisions.
    • Ensure that the LWML bylaws and related resources maintain the legal status of the organization, incorporate necessary changes in procedures and structure and are adaptable.
    • Provide resources to assist district, zone and local structure committees in fulfilling their responsibilities.
