Joy Dougherty Called Home to Glory

nullJoy Dougherty, Toledo, Ohio, died after a valiant fight with cancer on August 30, 2015, and is home in the arms of her Savior, Jesus.

Joy was born on April 8, 1941. She was a baptized child of God and a pastor’s daughter. She was proud of the fact that she came from a family of pastors and teachers in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Joy served as Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Recording Secretary from 2013 until her death.

Joy previously served her Lord at the local LWML level, as president and vice president of the zone, chairman of the district nominating committee, LWML Ohio District President, and mission editor of the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly.

Joy delighted in the relationships established through the LWML and cherished her sisters and brothers in Christ. While attending a banquet at the  LWML Ohio District Convention, the banquet master of ceremonies, a young man from her congregation, mentioned his grandfather. Amazingly enough, the young man’s grandfather was a very close friend of Joy’s father. Both men served congregations in Detroit, Michigan earlier in their pastoral ministry. This old relationship led to a new one as Joy met the young man’s mother at the 2013 LWML Convention in Pittsburgh, and they shared memories of a time when they were just little girls.

Joy was active in the community and held several offices for the International Association of Administrative Professionals, the Ohio Business Teachers Association, and the local chapter of Thrivent Financial. Joy was most recently employed as an associate professor at the University of Toledo. She enjoyed creative writing and editing, her family, and spending time with friends.

Joy once shared, “My prayer is that LWML will continue to fill each woman with the eagerness and enthusiasm to grow spiritually, to support missions, and to be an ambassador for our Lord and Savior in word and deed wherever she is placed.” She would have wanted to be remembered as a woman of faith who loved her husband and family dearly, treasured her Lutheran education, and who lived a life of service to her Lord and to her profession.

Joy is survived by her husband John, three children, and seven grandchildren.

Joy’s favorite Bible verse is Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5 RSV).

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Toledo, Ohio, and a worship celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 11 a.m.

Please remember LWML in your estate plan.
