Mailbox Member Program

The Mailbox Member Program (MMP) is an intentional way to reach the women of your congregation who may not be participating in established LWML group activities.

This monthly program is designed to connect women to the Word through the Bible studies and articles in the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly and to service opportunities available in the LWML and local groups.

You, as a Lutheran Woman in Mission, have the exciting opportunity to reach out and encourage women to participate in God’s work through LWML right where God has placed them. You can adapt this program to fit your setting.

The resources of the MMP enable women to live as redeemed children of the Triune God as they:

  • Grow in faith through the study of God’s Word;
  • Understand and support mission giving at home and abroad;
  • Participate in servant events as individuals equipped by God to serve others; and
  • Find support from other sisters in Christ who value and benefit from each other.

Participants in the MMP may be women who:

  • Work outside of the home and have schedules that do not allow them to attend LWML activities;
  • Are homebound or live in an assisted living or care facility;
  • Are unable to attend meetings due to their children’s schedules;
  • Are recovering from illness or an injury;
  • Are unable to attend due to distance;
  • Attend a college/university;
  • Are missionaries around the world; and
  • Want to be a Lutheran Woman in Mission!

Each woman of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is invited to embrace her role as a Lutheran Woman in Mission by being a part of the Mailbox Member Program. As each woman is the heart of LWML, Christ is in the heart of each woman as she engages in mission education, mission inspiration, mission service, and mission support. We encourage each LWML group to begin this program.

How do you begin?

  • Read through the LWML Mailbox Member Program and Coordinator Guide to familiarize yourself with the program.
  • If you are a group leader, appoint a woman to coordinate this program or lead it yourself.
  • Welcome women as they participate in any way.

January: Year 2

A printable PDF of these instructions can be found at the end of this article.

Leader instructions

The season of Epiphany is upon us. The star which guided the Magi to the newborn King provided light in a dark time — both literally and spiritually. This month, as the long winter days with shortened daylight can affect our usually sunny outlook, share with your Mailbox Members the devotion Season of Light.

Access the devotion Season of Light.

The middle of winter, at least in the northern climates, can get long for some people. This month, along with sending the devotion, ask members of your local group to make a phone call to your Mailbox Members — just to chat. The calls can be used to brighten one’s spirits, lift up concerns in prayer, or just chat about the weather. But receiving an unexpected — yet welcomed — phone call can be just what the doctor ordered during the darker times of the year.

For Paper Copies:
  • Download and print this month’s resource (in bold above) to share with each Mailbox Member.
  • Print as many copies of the resource as you need for your Mailbox Member participants.
  • Don’t forget to sign the message and leave your contact information!
  • As you place this information in your Mailbox Member participant’s mailbox, pray for this child of God!
For Electronic Communication:
  • Open this month’s resource idea and read the coordinator information.
  • Get ready to send a new email, and in the subject line write: LWML Mailbox Member Greetings
  • Copy and paste the Mailbox Member message on the next page into your email.
  • Attach the resource(s) for the month.
  • Send this message off with a prayer for this Mailbox Member, a child of God!

Distribute the devotion to your Mailbox Member participants with the following Mailbox Member Message:

(NOTE: Please insert your contact phone number in the fourth paragraph below)
(NOTE: Leader, if your group will not be making a phone call to your Mailbox Members this month, please edit the note below to reflect that change.)

Hello from LWML!

It’s January! We made it through the holidays and now we are settling in to winter. This time of year brings shortened days which can affect our usually sunny outlook.

Our devotion this month is Season of Light. But this “light” doesn’t refer to the big yellow globe in the sky; rather it reminds us of the Light of the World that came down for us in Bethlehem. As the Magi made their trek to visit this newborn King, they followed a star which led them to the place where the Infant lay. What trust they showed as they made this journey, a trust that was modeled for us.

This month, we would like to give you a quick phone call, just to chat. Hopefully when we call, it will be a good time for you, but if you’re busy, feel free to suggest a better time to connect with your LWML sister in Christ who will be calling you.

If you have any questions, please contact me at___________________________. I will be keeping you in my prayers this month especially as we enjoy God’s many blessings.

Your Sister in Christ,

February: Year 2

Leader instructions

Valentine’s Day falls during the month of February. Gifts are purchased, cards are written, and notes are sent to people far and near expressing our love for them.

Access the service project Knit a Stocking Cap for those in Need.

This month we are encouraging our Mailbox Members — and others in our congregation — to share the love of Jesus with those in need by making (or purchasing) stocking caps. These caps will be given to an agency of your choice. Very small ones could be given to the nursery in your local hospital for newborns, adult-sized caps can be shared with cancer patients, and still others can be donated to a homeless shelter in your community. Your group can decide which organization they will be supporting.

Some of your Mailbox Members might knit or crochet; others might be interested in providing the yarn to make the hats. But providing warm hats for those in need can be a project everyone can support in their own way.

For Paper Copies:
  • Download and print this month’s resource (in bold above) to share with each Mailbox Member.
  • Print as many copies of the resource as you need for your Mailbox Member participants.
  • Don’t forget to sign the message and leave your contact information!

Hello from LWML!

Valentine’s Day is coming soon — a time when we share messages of love with those who are special in our lives. This month we are encouraging our Mailbox Members and others to participate in a collection of knit stocking caps for those in need. If you knit or crochet, use your favorite pattern and make a hat or two that can be donated to those in need in our area. If you don’t knit or crochet, you might consider purchasing a knitting loom from a local craft store. The looms are easy to use even by children. What a great way to get kids involved in sharing something they have made with someone in need. Your participation can also model the selfless giving that was perfectly modeled for us in our Savior Jesus.

Attached to this note is more information about Knit a Stocking Cap for those in Need. If you have an opportunity to make some caps, let me know when they are finished and I will make arrangements to have them picked up, or you can bring them to church where we have a collection area for them.

If you have any questions, please call me at _______________________. It is a joy to be in service to others with you and our LWML sisters in Christ.

Your Sister in Christ,

Hello from LWML!

Each of us has a vocation in life. It may be to raise our children to love the Lord and use their gifts in service to the world. It may be to use the knowledge and skills God has given us to dispense healing medicine or design affordable housing. Our work, our vocation, is specific to each of us as God has empowered and gifted us to serve.

Our community is served by many who give of their time unselfishly so that we might live in safety. When you read the devotion this month, Working with Joy, pray for those who serve in our community — public safety officers, medical personnel, teachers, pastors, everyone who takes time to touch the lives of others and makes our world just a little bit better.

Have you taken the time to say “thank you” to any of these special people? Saying “thank you” can sometimes be taken for granted. We “assume” everyone knows we are grateful for their kindness and sacrifice, but unless we say it — how will they know? Maybe this month you will be moved to write a note of thanks to someone who has offered a kindness or service to you — your home health care aid, a police officer, your child’s teacher, or someone else who has lived their calling to serve.

May God bless you this month as you reflect on the service you have given to others and the service you have received.

Your Sister in Christ,
