September to Remember

Today, September 14, is the day the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) celebrates Giving Tuesday. Over the last two weeks, the LWML has focused on the people who have been “Shining Lights” in the lives of the LWML Board of Directors. Based on the verse Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16), they have shared stories of their “Shining Lights.”

Today, all LWML women and men can commemorate the “Shining Lights” in their own lives and honor them by donating to the LWML Mission Goal. What better way to recognize their impact on your life than by helping to spread the Good News of the Gospel!

This year, the LWML is blessed with a $10,000 matching fund which can double your donation. You may donate by clicking here, or through the LWML website, under the “Giving” tab, in honor of those “Shining Lights” in your life. You may also mail your donation, indicating it is for “September to Remember” or “Giving Tuesday,” to:

Hurricane Ida Disaster Response

Shortly before noon on August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, as a Category 4 storm. Its maximum sustained winds of 150 mph were below a Category 5 storm by just 7 mph. Southern District President Rev. Eric Johnson has begun surveying the damage and developing a district-wide disaster response plan. Many LWML groups have expressed a desire to help and this article was written to provide information to anyone interested in assisting in the recovery process.

The Southern District Office in Slidell, Louisiana, as well as property and homes of district staff were spared from damage. Churches and schools of the district did sustain damage, as did homes of church members, their families, and neighbors; and also businesses in communities that were struck by Ida.

According to the district office, monetary donations are the best way of providing material assistance. They are needed at every step in the recovery process, and they apply to each type of need that arises. One hundred percent of these donations go directly to disaster response. The link to the donation page is SO District Disaster Response Page. Updates on the response efforts can be found on the same website.

As our brothers and sisters in Christ deal with the day to day challenges of life after a massive storm, we surround them in prayer and ask our good and gracious Lord to protect and sustain them through this difficult time.

New LWML Committees will Meet and Plan

In the fall of each new biennium, the new, recently selected LWML committee members gather together for planning and training. Preparations are under way for the LWML Interdepartmental (ID) meeting to be held October 20–23, 2021, in St. Louis, Missouri.

With LWML’s Primary Focus in mind, committee and task force members will brainstorm, as they plan new ways to accomplish the strategic goals and objectives outlined for this biennium. Attendees will take part in Bible studies, training exercises, and fellowship activities. As Lutheran Women in Mission, they will joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving others. Please keep these women and men in your prayers, asking God to guide them in all they do.
