This book began when Bernice Bunkowske spoke at a mission breakfast, telling how her dream of being a missionary in Nigeria came true. The theme of the book is Isaiah 9:2, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined, a favorite Bible verse of Mary Slessor, pioneer missionary to Nigeria and Bernice's childhood heroine.

The stories in this book are written by women who served in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) mission in Nigeria. Some, like Bernice, had dreams of being a missionary in Nigeria. Others went in simple obedience to Christ's call.

Throughout Dreams Dawn in Africa, Bernice's story is interwoven with the experiences of the other missionary women. Each one has her own unique story. Together they form a composite of life in Nigeria.
