A Promise Fulfilled
A devotion for Pentecost
In the Word
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place (Acts 2:1).
Of the Word
It is significant that the disciples and others were gathered on the day celebrating the Feast of the Harvest — the original Pentecost — the 50th day after the Sabbath of Passover week. There is a parallel between the Old and New Testaments that connects Passover and Pentecost.
At Passover, the blood of a lamb is shed. In the Old Testament, the lamb’s blood resulted in life for those behind blood-stained doors. In the New Testament, Jesus is the Lamb whose blood was shed so that all who believe would have eternal life.
At Pentecost, the Feast of the Harvest, first fruits are offered. In the Old Testament, that offering was commanded in Exodus 23:16a: You shall keep the Feast of Harvest, of the firstfruits of your labor, of what you sow in the field. In the New Testament, the promise of the Holy Spirit is fulfilled, thus equipping the disciples for a different harvest — the harvest of souls.
The great news is that we, too, are equipped, just like the early disciples! The Holy Spirit is with us and enables us to share the Good News of salvation with others. We, too, can bear fruit through our testimony.
Walking with my Lord
Dear heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for Your gift of the Holy Spirit. Help us recognize the power given to us through this gift. Help us, Father, to be bold in our witness as the harvest is plentiful. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
