Lovely Gifts

undefined

by grace you have been saved … it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).

I just received an unexpected gift in my mailbox from a friend. What excitement and joy I felt to receive this lovely gift! It made me feel loved and cherished, and I couldn’t wait to call and thank her. I eagerly showed it to my husband and others, sharing the joy.

We just celebrated the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Now that’s a gift to tell the world about! He loved and cherished us so much that He laid down His life as a substitute for us sinners. Let’s thank Him for that lovely gift every day as it brings us joy here on this earth, and as we look forward to the ultimate gift of eternal life.

I find that our LWML website, lwml.org, and the LWML Store contain lovely items that we can give as gifts, including many devotions and Bible studies that are free downloads. Share the joy!

Spring up!

undefined

for behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone.  The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come (Song of Solomon 2:11-12a).

I received the LWML booklet “Devotions for All Seasons from my friend Arlene Naasz. My favorite reading in it is Starting Over. It’s about the coming of spring, where the writer speaks of winter and spring in a seasonal as well as a spiritual sense. Spiritually, the devotion is appropriate for a time when one’s spirit is low and praying has become difficult. It is then that we need a Christian friend who will pray with us and for us.

As we emerge from this extended winter of COVID and quarantines let us be willing to “spring up” to let God use us to comfort another Christian sister experiencing a winter of her own. (The booklet can be ordered through the LWML store here.)

so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God (2 Corinthians 1:4b NIV).

He Prayed WITH Them

undefined

“He Prayed with Them” is the title of the 2021 LWML Prayer Service that was prepared by Rev. Robert L. Mundahl, a former LWML Pastoral Counselor. It was written to help us expand our prayer life to include those times when we pray with others. How do we interact with our neighbors to discover their needs, cares, or concerns so we can pray for, and with, them?

How does your local group use the prayer service? Do you use it in small groups with readers, or do you use the PowerPoint presentation? Do you invite all the women of the congregation? Do you invite other LWML groups to participate with you? The LWML website has everything you need to conduct this service however you organize it.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

In Christ,

Held By God's Word

undefined

The year 2020 was a challenge! When I need to get through a challenging day or situation, I must begin with God’s Word. My Bible is on my smartphone, so it is accessible any time, day or night.

One of my favorite helpful apps is the LWML app. Each day I am in God’s Word through the LWML daily devotions, and inspiring podcasts. Enriching Bible studies from the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly such as “Held by His Word in Uncertain Times,” can also be found there.

As an LWML District President, I encourage women to download this app and use it daily to give them and others hope and comfort. So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.  (Isaiah 55:11)

Download the app today. You will be held by God’s Word which never returns empty, but accomplishes all according to His plan, even during challenging times.

Serving joyfully,

Becky Haltaufderheid, President

The Greatest Gift

Advent, the season of preparation and anticipation of the celebration of the birth of Jesus, has begun. As we shop, bake, and decorate, we need to remember that the greatest gift we have ever received came without our worldly preparations. Indeed, our heavenly Father has lavished on us the most wonderful gift imaginable—Jesus—all by His grace.

LWML offers a unique way to share the Good News of this gift. A wonderful assortment of Christmas notecards and bookmarks are available on www.lwml.org. These can be colored and shared with friends and family this season. They can also be used as gift tags, placemats, and Christmas tree ornaments.

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15).

Giving Thanks

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

In times like these it is especially important to take time to count the blessings that we have and to give praise and thanks to our generous God.

The month of Thanksgiving is a great reminder to be thankful.

How can we share God’s generous love and give thanks and encouragement to our LWML sisters and other special women in our lives?

If you are not meeting in person, you can nurture God’s Word in others by using LWML resources to send encouraging Mustard Seeds, the Quarterly, Bible studies, and cards. You can invite women in your congregation to help with projects and events and include them in Bible study, whether in person or electronically. You can encourage the women in your life to recognize, use, and be thankful for their God-given talents.

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us new ways of caring and sharing with one another during this unique time. Help us to continue to share Your Word and be thankful in all circumstances. Amen.

Prayer and Giving

Everyone can use extra kindness and encouragement during this season of COVID-19. Sharing that God is in control and is an ever-ready source of comfort and guidance is the best way we can encourage one another.

As a district president, I encourage our women to be in Bible study and prayer. Prayer requests are shared so that we can pray together for infants, people who are ill, survivors of people who have passed, people who are in our district, plus friends and neighbors near and far. LWML kindness is shown when our women follow up with cards, phone calls, or meals.

Another way of showing kindness is by providing for physical needs of those in our communities. In our church, we have a food drive once a month for a local food pantry. At the drop off site at church, we provide Portals of Prayer and the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly for donors to read and pass along to others. It is my prayer that you find a way to share God’s comfort during this time.
