Connected in Christ

Connected. What thoughts come to mind when you hear this word?

Each Christian’s connection with their Lord is established in Holy Baptism when the Spirit generates faith in Jesus and we are made God’s own children. The Spirit helps us stay connected to Christ through Word and Sacraments.

We also become connected to the family of believers, who support and uphold us. We crave the love of our fellow sisters and brothers in Christ, especially during forced separations. That can be a challenge in a world of sickness, anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension.

How can we connect, even from a distance?

  • Stay connected to God by being in His Word daily.
  • Share a Bible passage of encouragement and give an LWML sister a “virtual hug” and your love in Christ by phone, email, text, or mailing a card.
  • Glean ways to stay in God’s Word, to serve others, and to support the work of the LWML. Connect with the LWML website, www.lwml.org.
  • Pray without ceasing for your sisters in Christ.

God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him (1 John 4:16b).

Help Needed!

Have you heard about the LWML resource, “Women in Mission University”? Neither had I, until I discovered it at lwml.org. In addition to Bible studies, devotions, and planning ideas, there are suggestions on how to promote and educate women in your congregation about the many facets of the LWML, including some non-traditional ideas that might broaden your base of participation.

There’s an article, “Connecting in Our Technological World,” which reflects the importance of coming together face-to-face. Due to the coronavirus pandemic we are all missing that personal contact.  For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them (Matthew 18:20). So, for now using technology is a safe way to stay connected.  But, just imagine how great those LWML hugs are going to be!

Remember, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Let’s use the tools the LWML has made available to us. I encourage you to spend some time visiting the website. You will be amazed by what you discover!

LET’S RALLY OUR TROOPS!

The very first LWML Presidents Assembly has just adjourned! What an historic and productive meeting!

During discussions, the district presidents talked about terminology. One of the phrases discussed was “zone rally.” Many feel it is an outdated term; I among them. That is, I was among them until attending the LWML Florida-Georgia District’s Atlanta Zone Rally recently.

The pastor talked about the verb “rally,” sharing that he had actually looked up the definition. Listening to him talk fired-up my enthusiasm for rallying with LWMLers! Perhaps if we come together as zones in the true meaning of “rally,” many will be encouraged, engaged and energized! Especially if we consider these definitions: “to bring together for a common purpose; to revive; to come in order to help.”

That’s LWML, is it not? Coming together to assist our women to minister to others wherever they are? It is my sincere prayer that as we gather for a common purpose, we will help others, so all will be revived in joy, rejoicing in the Lord always!

Dear Lord, guide the women of the LWML as we gather for the common purpose of LWML — serving You with gladness. In Christ’s name. Amen.

A Season of Waiting

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand (James 5:7–8).

Advent is a season of waiting. We wait to celebrate Jesus’ birth on Christmas Day. We also continue to wait for Jesus’ return.

As LWML women, we spend time in God’s Word while we wait, as the Holy Spirit establishes in our hearts the life-saving truths found there. We spend time patiently working for our Lord. We collect mites for missions which spread the Gospel message. We pray, asking God to use our works and words to bring to faith those who do not yet know Him.

In this Advent season, how might you use LWML resources to share with others that Jesus is their Savior who has come, who works daily in our lives, and who will return?

Comfort, Comfort

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God (Isaiah 40:1).

Advent! Christmas! A happy time! But, is it, for everyone?

Christ came to give us comfort, and that comfort is in Him. However, all our human celebrations of His coming may be overwhelming for many in our communities and congregations. Think of the newly widowed, the young woman who just endured a miscarriage, or the family who is trying to make ends meet financially and now feels they need to provide even more for their children through gifts and treats. Many people, as an Advent hymn shares, are “mourning beneath their sorrows’ load.” As much as we want to prepare for Christ in our hearts and homes, the reality of life and its sorrows, for so many reasons, are still present in our sinful world.

Take time to share words of comfort and inspiration to those who worship beside you and those you meet throughout your day. Serve God by listening, reaching out, and sharing His love in the coming weeks. Share His comfort.

Do you have time?

Two Minute Tuesday

“Grandma, do you have time to play with me?” “If you have time, could you come to church for a committee meeting tomorrow?” “I’d love to go to lunch with you this week if you have time.” Sound familiar?

LWML is asking a similar question: In what way might we compete for people’s time? The leadership team suggested these initiatives as part of our strategic planning:

  • Create, initiate, and implement effective, relevantly focused, meaningful events

  • Develop time-sensitive, flexible, and varied events

  • Develop meaningful personal relationships

  • Include unique Christian relationship opportunities

  • Engage with a local mission entity for a one-time servant event.

I challenge you to consider ways to embrace one or more of these ideas for your LWML. As a result more women may find time to participate.

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).

God Changes the Bad to Good!

Two Minute Tuesday

It was not a good time for our church. Our pastor left and took forty percent of our congregation with him to start a new church in town. Martha said to me, “You need to come to LWML meetings. We don’t have enough people left.”

I thought that LWML was for “old ladies.” After all, my grandmother belonged, and my mom joined when she was in her 70s. I was only in my 30s! But I went because Martha asked me. I got hooked.

What was a bad time for our church, turned out to be a wonderful time for me. I gained new friends and a new focus. I did not have time to look back and bemoan the bad times.

Invite women to your LWML activities. Let the Holy Spirit do His work. Assure the women that they will receive blessings far beyond measure!

but few things are needed ‑ or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her (Luke 10:42 NIV).
