Partners in Mission

Partners in Mission

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5).

Our work is nothing without our Savior Christ Jesus. This verse reminds me of the relationship that the LWML has with pastors and other Church Workers in Mission. As branches, our work is intertwined, strengthened, and bears fruit. As we serve the Lord in our societies, zones, and districts, we look to our pastors and deaconesses for spiritual leadership, encouragement, and counsel. We all pray for each other, spend time in the Word, and help the church proclaim the Gospel. Please share your thoughts on other ways of engaging, encouraging, and enjoying the mission together. Email vpsfm@lwml.org. Our love and thankfulness goes out to our church workers for the support, love, and encouragement you give your sisters in the LWML.

Structure – Yes, it’s Important

Structure – Yes, it’s Important

Structure is important in every facet of our lives. As children we were taught basic hygiene, how to share, not to play in the street, etc. Structured activities prepare children for the real world where boundaries and following rules lead to a peaceful existence for those who abide by them.

We do not, however, want our children to mindlessly obey, not questioning practices they feel are unfair, but without structure chaos would reign.

In the LWML, our structure is built around our Vision and Mission Statements and our bylaws. Structure in the LWML should never confine your group to a fixed schedule where you can’t be creative or productive but enhance the productivity and joy of group activities. This structure keeps us centered on Jesus Christ and serving Him. If your group needs help keeping organized without feeling confined, contact us at depor@lwml.org.

Paint the Planet Purple with Servanthood

Paint the Planet Purple with Servanthood

Have you ever thought about what happens when there is a Servant Event or a Gifts from the Heart gathering? The work done and the items donated affect people’s lives in a wide variety of ways and the physical location could be nearby or far away. God uses the LWML to share His love and spread His word all over the world.

The Mission Servants Committee has a new logo that we feel expresses that idea and we hope that you like it, too. The new logo shows a world being painted with purple paint. The idea is that whenever there is a LWML Mission Servants Event, we are touching (or painting) a part of the planet with our purple LWML hearts. Everywhere the items are sent the LWML has “Painted the Planet Purple”.

You’ve done the Servant Events. Now why not tell people about LWML and wear the LWML shirt? Check out the new servant’s shirt at www.lwml.org/shoplwml/2016/3/lwml10091.

Serve the Lord with gladness! (Psalm 100:2)

How Can Our Photos Be A Winsome Witness?

How Can Our Photos Be A Winsome Witness?

It’s that time of year when cameras and smartphones and iPads are snapping photos at class parties and graduations, LWML district conventions, family reunions, and summer vacations. As we share those photos on social media or preserve them in scrapbooks, let’s look for ways to include witness opportunities by adding “faith flags” in our posting, tweeting, and journaling.

You might also be interested in using “Every Picture Can Tell God’s Story” as a personal or group study. This resource is designed to show new ways in which you can be a winsome witness of Jesus using your own personal photographs and experiences. The Leader Edition has suggestions for adapting it for mother-daughter study, youth groups, a workshop, or retreat. It comes in both a print and a downloadable format.

Let your photos bear witness to your faith in Christ!

Waiting to board a plane, I heard a deep voice say, "What's LWML?"  Turning, I saw a man  looking at my LWML bag. Time for my "elevator talk." I said, "It stands for Lutheran Women's Missionary League, an organization of mostly volunteers supporting mission work around the world through service and donations." I shared about the widow's mite from the Bible, how mites are used, my favorite grants, and  how we have funded over $100 million for grants.  Reaching the plane door, the man thanked me saying, "God bless you and the LWML." I  replied, "And also with you."

nullAs Lutheran Women in Mission approaches the 75th anniversary, we still communicate in person, through the Lutheran Woman's Quarterly, in newsletters, with cards and phone calls. We also share through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Share information about the LWML's 75th Anniversary with others and plan to attend the convention.

Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you (I Peter 3:15b).

Vacation Plans?

Vacation Plans?

nullAre you contemplating a vacation during the next year to see family you haven’t seen for a while, or perhaps a get-away? Allow me to suggest your travel plans include Albuquerque, New Mexico for the LWML’s 37th biennial convention June 22-25, 2017 where several thousand will join other sisters and brothers in Christ. The convention theme “Jesus Christ Above All” based on Philippians 2:9 will be the convention’s framework for enjoying God’s unending blessings, hearing inspirational mission grant recipient speakers, and participating in Bible study.

While in Albuquerque you will see familiar faces and make new friends that will become part of your lives for a very long time while you also enjoy the grandeur of mountains and national parks that cloak the city.  Significant to this convention will be LWML’s 75th anniversary Diamond Dazzle celebration. You sure won’t want to miss this exciting event.

God’s Word in a Suitcase?

God’s Word in a Suitcase?

Hello,

On behalf of the Uhuru Highway Cathedral Women League in Kenya, I would like to appreciate the provision of the bible study materials which we received  from you early this year. The ladies are making good use of them wherever they meet for their prayer meetings and devotions and they have great impact on their spiritual life.

As a group, we appreciate your Mission work and looking forward to share with you more in the near future.

May God bless you as you continue to serve in His vineyard.

Caroline  (Pastor Isaiah Obare’s wife)

It’s November of 2015 and LWML Meeting Manager, Leslie Jaseph, is headed to Nairobi, Kenya. Her son, Phil, has completed two years as an LCMS GEO missionary in Kenya as Communications Specialist for Africa. Knowing she would encounter women serving in the church in Kenya she shopped the LWML store and added these items to her suitcase:

A second email was received from the Kenyan Bible study group:

Hello Leslie,

Calvary greetings,

Last Saturday we met for our prayer meeting and we were blessed to use your bible study articles for the second time. It was amazing to learn more of the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Love, Joy and peace …) we appreciate the work Lutheran Women Missionary League is doing in evangelism.

Please attached find the picture of ELCK ladies after the bible study session.

LWML offers opportunities for women to express their faith through writing Bible studies, devotions, prayer books and doing artwork for those publications. Little did they know when they wrote a prayer to contribute to a prayer book or a devotion for the program helps page that it would end up halfway around the world encouraging and equipping our sisters in their Bible study, prayer and Christian education in East Africa. This is what Lutheran Women in Mission do. We enable women to use their God-given gifts in service to the world. The result of that service is up to the Holy Spirit.

We are blessed to have women like Leslie who take the initiative to distribute our resources. Where can you take God’s Word in the form of LWML resources? Will it be next door or across the ocean?

Make room in your suitcase this summer!

Serving Gladly,
Patti
