What's in a Name?

Devotion on Christian Living, Witnessing, Genesis 2:19. 1 page.

Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name (Genesis 2:19).

Our American culture embraces new words and blends new cultures into our existence daily. The United States is a melting pot not only of languages, but of peoples. Children attend school with students of all races, creeds, and religions. Are you afraid to share your background with them?

What God Sees

Devotion on Relationship with God, Lent, Philippians 3:8. 1 page.

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3:8).

During Lent, we contemplate Jesus’ Passion. We thank Him for His indescribable gift of salvation. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we focus on the eternal importance Jesus’ sin payment has on our lives. When we reflect on our Savior’s sacrifices on our behalf, His resurrection on Easter brings us even greater joy.

We Are Full!

Devotion on Dealing with Down Days, Isaiah 6:3b. 3 pages.

“ … Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:3b).

Imagine that there is a glass of water on a table in front of you. It is an eight-ounce glass which contains four ounces of water. Now, here’s a question for you: is the glass half-full or half-empty? Our broken, earthly world reminds us that the top of the glass is EMPTY.

Through Christ, we are given mercy, grace, and a new, eternal life (Psalm 23:6). We are forgiven and renewed. We go from empty and are made FULL by our loving and merciful God. So just what is it to be full?

Walking in His Light

Devotion on Relationship with God, 4th of July, Patriotism, Personal Spirituality, 1 John 1:5-7. 2 pages.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:5-7).

As the American patriots of old defended the country they loved, to the point of sacrificing their livelihoods, families, and even their own lives, so we as Christians are called to make a similar sacrifice. By walking in the light we are called to defend the Gospel – not just stand up for it, but to passionately spread the Good News to our neighbors over the fence and around the world.

Waiting for Milestones

Devotion on Comfort and Hope, Trust, Patience, Psalm 27:14. 2 pages.

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord (Psalm 27:14)!

Our Lord goes before each milestone. When we want to rush ahead and wish our lives away, He gently guides us as we pass by. As His children, we can rest in His assurance that He guides our every mile as He leads us to fix our eyes on Jesus and on our salvation that comes through the blood He shed for us on the cross.
