God, You Want Me?

Devotion on Missions, Isaiah 6:8. 2 pages.

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8).

Unlike Isaiah’s eager response, my initial reaction when asked to join a Haiti mission team was “Who, me? I’m a hot-headed, socially clumsy, middle-aged, adult convert from the backwoods. What credentials do I have to offer a team of experienced mission trippers?” I thought.

Be Still … in Times of Stress

Devotion on Stress, Psalm 46:10a. 1 page.

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10a).

As I raced around gathering books and papers for another full day of teaching, my eyes glanced over the wall hanging of Psalm 46:10. Many thoughts rushed through my brain, already frustrated from running late. “Be still? Really? I can’t; there’s so much to do!”

You Look Like Your Father

Devotion on Christian Living, Serving the Lord, Lutheran Women in Mission, Ephesians 2:10. 2 pages.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10).

A family resemblance can be comforting. It provides visual confirmation that we belong; we are part of the group. As Christians we are made in God’s image.

Can people see the love of Christ through you? Be a Lutheran Woman in Mission, sharing God’s love and compassion with a hurting and needy world.

Why Was I Left Here?

Devotion on Comfort and Hope, Encouragement, Personal Spirituality, Jeremiah 29:11. 5 pages.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

As a new widow, I pondered, “What is my normal?” I asked God questions like “Why was I left here?” and “Do You have a purpose for me?”

Woven Threads

Devotion on Relationship with Others, Spiritual Gifts, Diversity, 1 Peter 4:10. 2 pages.

As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace … (1 Peter 4:10).

Each time a new group of women gather together for Bible studies, meetings, or service projects, a unique tapestry is created. Every woman is created by God with unique gifts and talents, personality, strengths, and weaknesses. When we are woven together as sisters in Christ, we strengthen each other. Woven fabric is stronger than individual threads. The beauty of each individual is enhanced by the overall pattern. We are strong and effective when we support each other, appreciating and encouraging women to use their gifts and talents to serve.

Wounded Workers

Devotion on Comfort and Hope, Encouragement, Suffering, Ezekiel  34:15-16a. 2 pages.

"I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak" (Ezekiel 34:15-16a).

We do not need to be strong, healthy, or cheerful when we come before our Savior. When we have need, even tremendous need, or pain or weakness, we have a God who welcomes the weary.

Working Together in His Strength

Devotion on Christian Living, Service, Gifts, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. 2 pages.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).

As the verses from 1 Corinthians 12 explain, the Holy Spirit gives each of us gifts to use to carry out the work He gives us to do. There is not one gift that the Holy Spirit gives that is more important than another. Every gift that the Spirit gives is important in God’s kingdom and is given to be used to glorify Him and to point others to Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
