Steadfast in Christ

Single-session Bible study on Apostle’s Creed, Christian Living. 4 pages. Leader Guide available.

The dictionary defines “steadfast” as “firmly established, unchanging, not fickle or wavering.” Oh, no! If this is so, how do we become steadfast in Christ? And how do we remain steadfast in Christ? The answer is – we can’t! As human beings we sin daily in our thoughts, words, and deeds against God and our neighbors. The truth is, it is Christ who is steadfast to us! It is a gift! Our Heavenly Father’s steadfast love to us flows from the cross of Christ and gives us everything that we need to be steadfast in Him. This truth of Holy Scripture is summarized in the Apostles’ Creed. It is a baptismal confession of the early Church and is still used today in the Divine Service throughout the world. This study will take a brief look at God’s steadfastness to us by using Martin Luther’s beautifully crafted Meanings of the Three Articles of the Apostles’ Creed.

Learning to become an “at-ease” witness tool, useful to Jesus for sharing His love, saving grace, forgiveness, wisdom, and hope, is a goal we all want to attain. As most worthwhile endeavors, it usually takes study, determination, prayer, and practice. How does one go about this? By examining and following examples given us in Scripture through the inspiration of our God.

Mining Hidden Talents

Single-session Bible study on Caregiving. 4 pages. Leader Guide available.

Those of you who are familiar with the mining industry know that mining is hard work. It takes lots of time, patience, care, and persistence to mine the treasured gems in God’s creation. This is also true when mining hidden talents in those people around you who are also God’s creation. When we mine hidden talents in people, we don’t use drills, pick-axes, or dynamite as coal or gem miners do. Instead, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we use loving patience. As does everyone who God has created, individuals with special learning and physical needs also have unique gifts which God has given them. To mine their talents may take a little more patience and perseverance, but as you will see from the people we are about to meet, the effort will yield treasured blessings. Let’s meet some very special people and take a look at how they are using to God’s glory the talents He has given them that have been “mined” from within them.

Self, Self, Self

Single-session Bible study on Christian Living, Focus. 4 pages.

This study will address the harmful focus we place on “self.” This is the emphasis we are told to put on ourselves by the world versus what the Holy Word of God tells us our focus should be in order to please God in our relationship with Him. We will discuss why it is difficult to take the focus off ourselves; that we are uniquely created by God for Godly purposes, not self-purposes; how we should truly be grateful to God for His mercy, love, forgiveness, grace, and sacrifice; and the ways the Word tells us to show this gratitude in self-less ways.

Pass/Fail

Single-session Bible study on Christian Life, Discipleship. 2 pages.

Don't you just love those tests that are labeled PASS/FAIL? The written driver's test is a good example. What happened to grading on the curve, best three out of four or even doing "extra credit" projects to make up the difference?

We have seen that God's requirement for our test is strict law and its result is PASS/FAIL. "Keep my commandments and live." The law is there to convict us of our wrong doing.

God in His supreme love for us has given us the "extra credit" to pass His requirement. We don't have to perform any task, present a report, or write an essay to get this extra credit.

More Sins, Please

Single-session Bible study on Saved Despite Sinful Life. 2 pages. Leader Guide available.

It seems like it is so easy to fall into sin. Often it is justified by telling yourself, “No one is looking. What will it hurt if I …” Or, we may try to cover one sin by quickly committing another. Who is going to know? Does God really care when we act like this?

This Bible study looks at David's story in 2 Samuel 11–12.
