Foot Washers

Devotion on Caregiving, Lent, John 13:14. 1 page.

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. (John 13:14).

Jesus was a teacher extraordinaire! Not only did He explain with words, but He also used examples easily understood by common people. Jesus taught His disciples, including you and me, humility and love when He knelt down and washed the disciples’ feet.

Follow the Leader

Devotion on Leadership, John 10:17-18. 2 pages.

For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father (John 10:17-18).

Do you remember playing the childhood game, “Follow the Leader”? One person was chosen to lead and all others had to follow the example set by that person. The leader exerted great influence on the behavior of the group. Our world is full of many leaders: elected leaders, self-proclaimed leaders, natural leaders, and trained leaders. … We learn much from the leadership demonstrated by Jesus.

Finding the Way

Devotion on Christian Living, Salvation, John 14:6. 1 page.

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).

Being lost is not fun. Sometimes we find ourselves lost in a life style of our own devices. We feel overwhelmed with things in our life that are beyond our control. That’s when our only hope is to step back, take a deep breath, and let God be God for a better direction for our life.

Finding Peace in Troubling Times

Devotion on Comfort and Hope, Trust, Matthew 6:33. 2 pages.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added you (Matthew 6:33).

A lack of trust often presents itself as worry, fear, anxiety, discouragement, or a constant desire to fix things our own way. Have you found yourself in a similar situation?

Faithful Mates

Devotion on Marriage, Ephesians 5:25, 28. 2 pages.

Finding a life-long mate is a gift from God. A marriage is not without its long and tiresome journeys, dusty and dirty roads, and annoying circumstances that may bug or even hurt you. But a loyal husband vows companionship and care, and a peace-filled wife finds comfort in his promise.

A life-long union between a husband and his wife brings each spouse comfort and joy. Our eternal life-long union with God which began when we were baptized, gives us the perfect comfort and joy that only our trustworthy God can give.

Extra Pieces

Devotion on Christian Living, Purpose in Life, Psalm 139:13. 2 pages.

Often, I feel as if I'm just an “extra piece” with no real purpose for being here. But, is that the case? Did God really create some people to be “extras,” to be used as filler in the world? No, of course not. God tells us in several Bible verses that each of us has a reason for being here.

Drive Wisely

Devotion on Christian Living, Wisdom, Proverbs 1:5. 1 page.

Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance … (Proverbs 1:5).

Driver’s Education involves four stages: classroom, written test, observation, and behind the wheel. In the classroom phase, a beginner hears about driving. But hearing alone does not guarantee a passing grade on the written test. One must learn the material. Then as the student watches others drive, learning shifts to understanding. Knowing how to use a turn signal 200 feet before an intersection differs from visually recognizing where 200 feet actually begin. Finally when the pupil climbs behind the wheel, applied learning results in a successful trip. While no analogy is perfect, we see in Proverbs 1:5 a similar process for attaining wisdom.
