I confess. I am a hoarder. Of sorts. I save bits and pieces of fabric, paper, and packaging I might use someday in a “project.” Last fall I used bits of felted wool and vintage buttons from my collection to create lapel pins. The wool was recycled from tattered and stained sweaters and garments. As I began pairing pieces and colors, I couldn’t help but think of how God fashions us anew in Jesus. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). God  takes the faded hopes, brittle and torn intentions, and sin-eaten spirits and re-forms us into sons and daughters; beautiful, and perfectly suited for His work: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

February, the shortest month of the year, is filled with special days such as: Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day.

For Christians, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the solemn season of Lent, a time to focus on Jesus’ journey to the cross of Calvary. Even though that time is somber, we know that the light and glory of Easter are coming. Jesus died; Jesus lives; He promises life eternal to all who believe in Him!

But what about the other days? What about February 3 or February 19 or February 27? Are they special, too? Yes! The psalmist reminds us, This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24 NIV).

As we go about our daily routines, we remember that the Lord has lovingly given us this day and that He walks beside us through the day. We know that He promises to be with us every day. Rejoice and be glad!

A video posted on Facebook caught my attention. It featured a man taking his Christmas tree to be recycled. The commentary went something like this:

Christmas is over, all the family and friends have gone home, the food is eaten, the gifts opened, the special worship services and concerts over, and the decorations have been put away. It’s like Christmas never happened … but, thanks be to our Lord and Savior, Christmas REALLY happened! Our Savior Jesus was born, lived, and died in our stead for our sins. He was raised from the dead conquering sin, death, and the power of Satan - assuring us of eternal life in Christ. It REALLY happened. And it changed everything!

This coming Wednesday the season of Lent begins. This is a time to concentrate on fundamental values and priorities, a time to draw closer to the Christ of Christmas and see that it is He who gives it all for you. The celebration of Christmas may well be over for you, but Christmas is real, Christ is real, and He lives for and loves you!

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord (Luke 2:11).

It is mid-year in the academic world and as the end of the school year approaches, many schools begin a countdown to the last day of school. Let’s consider another countdown. One that ends with celebrations, Bible studies, and mission speakers. Yes, a countdown to our convention in Des Moines, Iowa. The Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly has arrived on doorsteps across this great land of ours with everything you need to know to register for the Des Moines convention. As you read this article, the countdown is around 150 days. Find a calendar and mark off the days. There is much to do before that opening service on June 25, 2015, and there are many women still unaware of this incredible gathering. The Time is NOW to spread the word about this exciting event. Grab a friend or family member and share a room. Tell others of the wonderful speakers, gather items for sharing Gifts from the Heart, and pray for all who are preparing for the thousands of participants!
