God’s Unfailing Love

Devotion on Relationship with God, Psalm 33:22. 2 pages.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you (Psalm 33:22 NIV).

Some translations offer “steadfast mercy” instead of “unfailing love” in this passage. What a delightful picture: God’s immovable, unchangeable, reliable, merciful regard for us as His children. The questions "What is God’s love?", "How sure is God’s love?", and "In what do we have hope?" are covered in this devotion.

Devotion on Relationship with God, 2 Samuel 22:2–3. 1 page.

And he (David) said, “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence (2 Samuel 22:2–3 KJV).

What is “bedrock”? Webster defines it as the solid rock, underlying soil, or the base, bottom or foundation. When we think of God as our rock, we do not throw Him aside, but we do as David did. He looked at God as his bedrock, the One he held on to in victory or in trials and testing in his life. The Lord is his firm foundation.

A Piece of the Rock

Devotion on Trust, Relationships with God, Isaiah 51:1–2. 1 page.

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the Lord: look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. Look at Abraham, your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him” (Isaiah 51:1–2).

We, like the people in Isaiah’s day, try to live right and follow the Lord, but because we are sinners, we neither live right nor follow the Lord on our own. That is why we need to look to the Rock — our Rock of Salvation, Jesus Christ, for strength and reassurance.

The Lord, My Solid Rock

Devotion on Relationship with God, Psalm 62:1–2. 1 page.

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken (Psalm 62:1–2).

I pick up rocks almost every place we travel as visual reminders of an exceptional event. As I look at my collection of rocks, they continually remind me of the many Psalms that speak of God as our Rock and Fortress.

Slipping and Sliding

Devotion on Christian Living, Trust, Matthew 6:24a. 2 pages.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other” (Matthew 6:24a).

Slipping and sliding looks different from different perspectives … fun, scary, adventurous, frustrating, or frightening. We not only can be slipping and sliding through incidents in our life regarding bad weather or exciting adventures, but we also can be slipping and sliding in our faith walk. … Why would we think we could do a better job running our lives than God?

Knee Deep in Slime!

Devotion on Relationships with others, Witnessing, Psalm 40:1–3. 2 pages.

I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD (Psalm 40:1–3).

We are facing some tough times that will require each Christian to use her/his God-given gifts to deal with “slime.” God gives us the opportunity to exercise our faith when we come face-to-face with tragedies such as pandemics, droughts, hurricanes, terrorism, wars, immigration issues, serious illnesses, etc. We are called to reach out to the hurting.

Love: Not An Option

Devotion on Relationships with others, Witnessing, 1 John 3:18. 1 page.

My children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring (1 John 3:18 New Century Version).

Options are good aren’t they? We exercise many options in our day-to-day choices of what to wear, eat, say, and do. … Love is not an option: it is a privilege that we, as dearly loved children of God can demonstrate to those around us and in our world.
